AM Best financial strength rating: A++

BBB rating: A+

State Farm is the nation’s most popular car insurance provider according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), with more than $41 billion in car insurance premiums written in 2021. We named the company our Editor’s Choice because it offers a solid combination of competitive rates, generous discounts and has many local insurance agents spread across the U.S.

State Farm Coverage

Along with standard auto coverage options, State Farm wide range of other policy add-ons include:

  • Rideshare insurance: Provides protection related to liability to others and damage to your car if you use it as a rideshare driver
  • Trip interruption benefits: Pays up to $500 per loss for meals, lodging and transportation if you’re more than 50 miles from home

In addition to other discounts, State Farm has a usage-based insurance program called Drive Safe & Save™. Good drivers who maintain safe driving habits while using it can save up to 30% on their premium when they renew their policy.

#2 USAA: Low Rates for Military

J.D. Power rating: 879/1,000

AM Best financial strength rating: A++

BBB rating: Not rated

As is the case in many states, USAA offers the lowest average car insurance rates in Kansas. The catch is that the company’s policies are available only to active military, veterans and their immediate family members.

USAA Coverage

USAA offers standard auto coverage options and add-ons such as:

  • Accident forgiveness: Available at no added cost to USAA-insured drivers who have been insured for the past five years without any at-fault accidents
  • New car replacement: Pays you 20% more than the cash value of your car if it is totaled

The company also features rental car reimbursement and classic car insurance. SafePilot®, USAA’s usage-based program, can unlock discounts of up to 30% at policy renewal.

USAA Reputation

Although it received the highest score in the Central region of the J.D. Power Auto Insurance Study with 879 points, USAA wasn’t formally ranked due to its unique eligibility requirements. #3 Nationwide: Competitive Rates

J.D. Power rating: 800

AM Best financial strength rating: A+

BBB rating: A+

Nationwide has been in business for nearly 100 years and wrote over $5 billion in auto premiums in 2021 according to the NAIC. Affordable rates and widespread availability make the company a good car insurance option for Kansas drivers.

Nationwide Coverage

You’ll find the standard liability and full-coverage auto insurance options from Nationwide, as well as the following key add-on options:

  • Gap coverage: Covers the difference between your car’s value and how much you still owe on it in the event of a covered total loss
  • Accident forgiveness: Prevents your premium from increasing after one at-fault accident or minor traffic violation
  • Vanishing deductible: With each year of safe driving, you can take $100 off your deductible
  • Roadside assistance: Towing, fuel delivery, flat tire replacement and jump-starts are all included

Bundling your auto insurance with other policies, completing a state-approved safety course and driving a vehicle that’s equipped with certain anti-theft devices are all ways to save with Nationwide. Discounts like these can help offset potential higher quotes that may be related to having bad credit or to a spotty driving history.

Nationwide Reputation

Nationwide policyholders gave the company a 4.1 out of 5.0-star rating for overall customer satisfaction in our 2022 car insurance survey. The provider’s affordability, coverage, shopping and website scores were all in line with competitors.

The J.D. Power Auto Insurance Study wasn’t as kind to Nationwide, as the company ranked last among national providers in the Central region, with 800 out of 1,000 points. We reached out to Nationwide for a comment on its low score but did not receive a response.

AM Best financial strength rating: A+

BBB rating: F

The third-largest auto insurer in the U.S. according to the NAIC, Progressive holds 13.7% of the market share. We recommend the company as an ideal option for high-risk drivers, as its rates for those with speeding tickets or a poor credit score are more affordable than most other providers.

Progressive Coverage

To go with its standard auto insurance products, Progressive offers:

  • Rideshare insurance: Covers drivers who operate on delivery service platforms
  • Pet coverage: Progressive Pet Insurance is available in three coverage choices
  • Loan/lease payoff: Provides for up to 25% of your vehicle’s value
  • Custom parts coverage: Protects the value of modifications and aftermarket components up to a certain limit
  • Small-accident forgiveness: For new policyholders, rates will stay the same if the damage from an accident comes in below $500

Snapshot® is the company’s usage-based program, and it rewards safe driving habits with premium savings. Be aware, though, that riskier behaviors behind the wheel can lead to higher rates when using Progressive’s telematics program.

Progressive Reputation

Progressive received solid ratings from customers in our 2022 nationwide car insurance survey. Policyholders gave the company a 4.1 out of 5.0-star rating for overall customer satisfaction, along with industry-average ratings in all other categories.
